Of course, we knew that Olivia Rodrigo had a new album on the way, but she has given us some more information regarding the GUTS tracklist! While we may not know much about the sounds or lyrics of these newly unveiled тιтles, Olivia did give fans a little more to hold them over until the album releases on September 8th.
The tracklist
In a quick and retro video, Olivia types out the tracklist on a typewriter with some flashy cutaways dispersed throughout. As of now, we may not be able to completely deduct what the songs will be like, but the тιтles give some hints. Tracks 9 and 12 are “love is embarrᴀssing” and “teenage dream” (read: teenage angst). Could “pretty isn’t pretty” and “ballad of a homeschooled girl” be the heartache anthems of the year?
How it was revealed
Olivia Rodrigo does not often share her art plainly. Rather, she likes to tease mysteriously and announce methodically. She posted this video to prep her fans for the official tracklist, but certainly left little clues as to what its contents would be. For instance, in the video, Olivia can be seen making her bed and writing “bad idea right” on her mirror. Those of course go with songs contained in the tracklist called “making the bed” and “bad idea right?”
Curating an aesthetic
One of Olivia’s best talents (besides her songwriting!) is her ability to play with nostalgia. Her tracklist reveal pieces together the aesthetic she wants to create for this album—one that’s best described as remniscent. Reminiscent of what? Well, that’s the very point. It is endlessly retro, endlessly reminiscent of something and anything. Perhaps it has the flair of 2000s coming-of-age films? Or maybe a touch of Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die Americana essence? The list can and does go on. As Gen Z has proven nostalgia to be *most* irresistable through their fashion, film and music taste, whose music is more current than Olivia Rodrigo?
