It was all about the silver Gucci gown for makeup artist Lorrie Turk when deciding with client Taylor Swift about what to do for her Grammys red carpet makeup.

“Taylor wanted her look to be classically beautiful, but with a modern, young edge,” Turk tells Pret-a-Porter. “We thought a cooler color palette of gray blue was the way to go with her dress.”

Turk left Swift’s skin and lips simple to allow the eyes to pop. To get the sultry smoked look, she started with MAC Paint Pot in Clearwater (sea foam) all over the eyelids and followed with Kevyn Aucoin shadow in Cool Smoke from eye shadow duo 203. She lightly brushed this smoky gray shadow in the crease and below the eyes before lining the upper lash line with Trish McEvoy gel liner in Arabian Nights. “It’s a fabulous purplish blue color with real pop,” says Turk.

For highlight and sparkle, she added Chanel Illusion D’Ombre eye shadow in Fantasme (silvery white shimmer) to the inner corners of the eyes, and then finished with coats of Armani Eyes to Kill mascara.

Swift’s hair, courtesy of stylist Jemma Muradian, was styled with soft, full curls before being pulled up into a ponytail with a piece of hair wrapped around the rubber band, and her bangs swept to the side. During the show, when it was time to perform “All Too Well,” the look transferred beautifully to hair down and makeup that coordinated flawlessly with the Alberta Ferretti gown Swift changed into.
